To create, produce, and distribute hand dyed and specialty fabrics – for multi-media artists and crafters – along with original design patterns.
The seed for Garage Studio Fabrics, a Southern California based fabric and fiber-art design and production studio, began to grow when owner Sherri McKee realized she simply couldn't find the right fabrics in the right colors to complete design projects the way she imagined them. Through learning to create the fabrics she needed, she realized that making the fabrics themselves was her true calling. Now, she turns her skills and knowledge to make custom design fabrics for other artists and crafters through highly specialized methods. Resourcing the best-milled fabrics and dyes and using them to make something new is her unique alchemy. Making them available to other artists and crafters is her mission.
Sherri McKee is a writer, poet, series and collage artist, whose work has been featured in small publications and magazines. She originated the zine SHEMOM, featuring short writing, fiction and poetry about all things family, is the creator of a fine art Tarot deck, as represented in the Encyclopedia of Tarot, and a chapbook of fragmented poetry based on translations of the ancient poet Sappho.
McKee studied art, writing, and teaching at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS and received her MA and PhD in English and American Literature from University of California, San Diego. There, along with her teaching, she specialized in the work of 20th century American poets along with the contemporary school of Language poets.
After discovering a passion for color and making those colors come alive in textiles, Sherri studied fabric- dyeing techniques with many of the most renowned teachers available. Presently her work focuses on textile dyeing, appliqué, rug hooking, and mixed media collage based on traditional and contemporary uses of resist dyeing and discharge, and quilting.
Her home and studio are located in Carlsbad, California.
